Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited the United States to meet with President Donald Trump, focusing on strengthening the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The discussions covered multiple aspects of bilateral cooperation, including trade, technology exchange, and defense collaboration. Strengthening military ties was a key agenda item during the high-profile meeting.

During the meeting, President Trump announced that the United States has plans to offer the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jet to India. This development marks a significant step in defense relations between the two nations and aligns with India's efforts to modernize its air force and enhance its strategic capabilities. The F-35, known for its advanced stealth, avionics, and combat capabilities, could serve as a game-changer for India's air defense.

The announcement coincides with the ongoing Aero India 2025 event, where the F-35 is making an appearance for demonstration purposes. Notably, the event features a comparison between the F-35 and the Russian Su-57, highlighting the ongoing global competition between Western and Russian stealth fighter technologies. India has traditionally relied on a mix of Western and Russian military hardware, making this development particularly significant.

India's potential procurement of the F-35 in limited numbers is seen as a strategic move to address security challenges posed by China and Pakistan. The F-35’s advanced radar-evading capabilities and network-centric warfare features could provide India with a technological edge over regional adversaries. The acquisition would serve as a stopgap measure until India successfully develops and deploys its own indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) stealth fighter, which is currently under development by DRDO and HAL.

India already operates several American military platforms, including the P-8I Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlifters, and AH-64 Apache attack helicopters. The addition of the F-35 to India's inventory would further enhance interoperability between Indian and U.S. forces while reinforcing India's growing reliance on advanced American defense technology.

This offer from the United States represents a significant shift in defense relations and could lead to further collaboration in technology transfer, joint development programs, and enhanced interoperability between the Indian and U.S. air forces. However, India will have to assess multiple factors, including operational integration, financial viability, long-term logistical support, and geopolitical implications before making a final decision on acquiring the F-35.
